20 Weeks Pregnant: When You'll Feel Baby Move

Halfway through! Around this point many parents start to notice their baby moving for the first time — a moment known as quickening. Here is what to expect at 20 weeks, what those first movements feel like, and why this is a good time to start paying gentle attention to your baby's activity.

When Do You First Feel Baby Move?

Most women feel the first flutters between 18 and 24 weeks. If this is your first baby, you may not notice movement until closer to 24 weeks, because early flutters are easy to mistake for gas or digestion. If you have been pregnant before, you often recognise the sensation sooner — sometimes before 18 weeks. Either way, there is a wide normal range, so do not compare yourself to others.

What First Movements Feel Like

Early movement is usually described as flutters, bubbles, swishes, or the feeling of popcorn popping. Over the coming weeks these become stronger, clearer, and easier to recognise as kicks, jabs, and turns. Some days your baby will feel very active; other days much quieter. This is completely normal this early — your baby has plenty of room and shifts position often.

Is a Regular Pattern Expected Yet?

Not yet. Fetal movement at 20 weeks is not consistent from day to day, which is why formal kick counting is not recommended before the third trimester. Right now, the goal is simply to start tuning in: notice when your baby tends to be active and how it feels. That awareness becomes useful later, when movement settles into a pattern.

What Your Baby Is Doing This Week

At 20 weeks your baby is roughly the size of a banana and is practising movements you cannot feel yet — stretching, kicking, hiccupping, and even responding to sounds. The anatomy scan often happens around this time, a wonderful moment to see your baby moving on screen.

Start Your Pregnancy Journal

The first flutter, the first partner to feel a kick, the anatomy scan — these are moments worth remembering. The Baby Kicks Pregnancy Tracker app includes a private pregnancy journal right next to your movement tracking, so you can capture milestones as they happen and look back on them later.

When to Mention Movement to Your Provider

From now on, it is good to mention at your appointments whether you have felt your baby move. If you have concerns at any point — for example, you have not felt any movement by around 24 weeks, or you are worried about a change — talk to your healthcare provider. It is always better to ask.

FAQ

I'm 20 weeks and haven't felt anything yet — is that normal?

Yes. First-time parents often do not feel clear movement until 22–24 weeks. If you are at all worried, mention it at your next appointment or call your provider.

Can I start kick counting now?

Movement is not consistent enough this early for formal kick counting. Most guidance recommends starting around 28 weeks — see our week 28 guide below.

Should I be worried if one day is quiet?

At this stage, days of activity vary a lot and that is normal. If movement is a concern at any stage, contact your provider.
