Reduced Baby Movement: When to Worry and What to Do

If you think your baby is moving less than usual, this page tells you what you need to know. The most important message is short: contact your healthcare provider or maternity unit the same day — any time, day or night — if you notice a reduction, a stop, or a clear change in your baby's movements.

Most Important: Get Checked

  • Call your maternity unit or doctor straight away — the same day, at any hour.
  • Do not wait until tomorrow "to see if it improves".
  • Do not rely on home tricks like a cold drink or lying down to "wake" the baby — these are not a reliable check and can delay care.
  • Do not rely on a home doppler to reassure yourself. A heartbeat can sound fine even when your baby needs assessment. It can be falsely reassuring.
  • It is never a bother to be checked. Early assessment is what keeps your baby safe.

What "Reduced Movement" Means

Reduced fetal movement (RFM) is simply when your baby's usual pattern of movement slows down, stops, or clearly changes. Every baby is different, so the warning sign is not a fixed number of kicks — it is a change from what is normal for your baby. A baby that is usually active suddenly going very quiet, or a pattern that has been gradually slowing over days, both deserve a same-day check.

Is a Quiet Hour Normal?

Sometimes. Babies have sleep cycles of about 20–40 minutes, and occasionally up to about 90 minutes, during which they move little. A short quiet spell by itself can be normal. The difference is whether movement is reduced compared with your baby's usual pattern, or whether you feel something is genuinely wrong. If you are at all unsure or worried, get checked — it is always the right call.

Myth: Babies Move Less Near the Due Date

This is one of the most dangerous pieces of pregnancy folklore. Babies do not slow down because they run out of room. They keep moving in their usual pattern right up to and during labour. If someone tells you less movement is normal at the end of pregnancy, do not accept it — contact your provider.

What Providers May Do

When you are checked, your provider may listen to the baby's heart, monitor movements, or arrange a growth ultrasound and other assessments. Getting checked quickly is important because reduced movement can sometimes be an early warning sign of a baby needing more care, and prompt assessment has been shown to help. The large majority of babies checked for reduced movement are found to be healthy.

How Tracking Helps You Know Your Baby's Normal

You cannot spot a change in movement unless you know the usual pattern. That is why maternity guidance encourages awareness of fetal movements from the third trimester. The Baby Kicks Pregnancy Tracker app makes this easy: one tap per movement, automatic session timing, and a history that shows you exactly what is normal for your baby. Use it to know your baby's rhythm — and to give your provider concrete details if you ever need to be seen.

FAQ

Should I try to count kicks if I'm worried?

No. If you are worried about reduced movement, skip the home checks and contact your maternity unit or doctor straight away. Get checked the same day.

Can a cold drink or sweet food reliably wake the baby?

No. These tricks are not a reliable test and can waste valuable time. If movement seems reduced, go straight to professional assessment.

Will I be "bothering" anyone by calling?

No. Reduced movement is a standard, important reason to contact your maternity unit. Checking is always the right choice.
